When and how to provide feedback in Canvas to your students.
When must I provide students with Marks?
You must make sure that marks and feedback for summative assessments are entered into Canvas in a timely manner so that students are able to access them through the Learner Portal within 10 working days of the assessment taking place. Feedback is not required to be provided with examination outcomes.
This is why we recommend that all assessments are provided to students using Canvas, and that you use a Canvas Rubric wherever possible, and by using SpeedGrader you can quickly and efficiently mark student work and provide feedback.
You must also give students their marked assessment (excluding exams). Again, this is why we encourage you to use Canvas Assignments, Rubrics and SpeedGrader correctly. Students can then see their marked assessment.
Correct Due Dates
Make sure when you setup the Assignment on Canvas, you enter correct due dates, and these due dates match the dates on your Syllabus page (Course Outline). Students base the 10-day turnaround on dates they are given. Make sure you give them the correct date.
Feedback
Feedback to students is important. They will hopefully not sit that exact assessment again, but they may use feedback from it to help them learn for next time. Make sure where possible that feedback is useful for the future, e.g. if students have written a report, comment on how they have written it, e.g. writing style/references. They can use this feedback next time they write a report.
If you correctly use a Canvas Rubric and SpeedGrader, you can give feedback on individual criteria/tasks of the assessment, not just feedback on the assessment overall.
Formative Assessment Marks/Feedback
Your Canvas course may contain a number of formative assessments. These are primarily for you, so that you can inform your teaching – what do you have to teach in order that students fully understand a topic. However, make sure that you give students feedback as often as you can so that they also know how they can improve their knowledge/skills.
