Programme Design: Why Alignment Matters

Programme design is the process of planning a full course of study so all parts work together. This video explains how good programme design creates a clear learning journey for students, from the first module to the final outcome.

Programme design starts with the end in mind. First, decide what a graduate should know, do, and demonstrate. Then work backwards to build courses, learning activities, and assessments that lead to that outcome. This is often called a “backward design” approach and helps keep everything focused and purposeful.

Next, think about how the programme fits together. Each course or module should connect to the overall programme goals. When courses are designed in isolation, students may feel confused or overloaded. However, when everything is linked, students can see their progress and build skills step by step.

Programme design also focuses on structure and progression. Learning should move from simple ideas to more complex ones over time. As a result, students develop confidence and deeper understanding as they move through the programme. Clear sequencing helps avoid gaps or repetition in learning.

Another key part is alignment. Learning outcomes, teaching activities, and assessments must all match. This ensures students are taught what they need and assessed fairly. In addition, strong programme design supports engagement by making learning meaningful and connected to real-world skills.

Good programme design also considers the learner experience. Courses should be easy to navigate, inclusive, and relevant to student needs. When done well, it turns a set of courses into one clear and supportive learning journey.

Using programme design principles in Canvas helps lecturers build structured, aligned, and engaging courses that support student success.

Tip: Start with the final outcome. Then map each course and assessment back to it to check everything connects clearly.
