AI Do’s and Don’ts

Lecturers should approach AI with an open mind, focusing on its potential to enhance learning rather than rushing to ban it due to concerns about misuse. Embracing AI thoughtfully can lead to improved educational practices and ensure all students have equal access to new technology.

Here are some important tips for lecturers to keep in mind when exploring AI technology.

DON’T: Jump to Conclusions

Banning AI has become a popular reaction in schools around the world. However, this approach might only delay the inevitable and lead to bigger issues later as AI becomes more common.

Instead of rushing to ban the technology, lecturers should take a closer look at how AI works and how it can improve learning. This isn’t a new idea; technology has long been used to enhance education. For example, calculators were once controversial, but now they’re essential in many math and science classes. AI could be the next big step in educational technology.

DO: Start a Dialogue

Education tends to change slowly, especially when new technology is involved. But now is a great chance for lecturers to rethink this approach.

Rather than reacting to concerns about how students might misuse AI, lecturers should ask, “How can AI benefit us?” Remember how schools adapted to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic? That same open-minded approach can be applied to AI. By exploring how AI can be used positively, lecturers can help shape its role in education.

DO: Use AI to Enhance Learning and Prevent Cheating

Like calculators and computers before it, AI can help students complete assignments faster, allowing lecturers to give more challenging and engaging work.

AI also has the potential to make learning faster and more effective. Some AI tools can even detect if a piece of work was generated by AI. This means lecturers can use these tools to identify and address cheating. Just as tools like Grammarly help catch copied work, AI can be a new way to maintain academic integrity.

DON’T: Forget About Fair Access

When integrating AI into the curriculum, it’s crucial to consider the digital divide. Not all students have equal access to technology, so schools and policymakers must ensure that everyone can use tools like AI.

Lecturers themselves stand to gain a lot from learning how to use AI tools effectively. This will require open discussions, expanding teaching methods, and setting up ethical guidelines to make sure all students benefit equally.

DO: Embrace the Unknown

AI is still new, and we’ve only begun to explore its potential. Lecturers who approach it with curiosity and an open mind may find it surprisingly useful. Being open to new technology can lead to valuable discoveries and improvements in education.
