This ‘Skills Article’ explains how to complete MIT’s Check-Marking Report template.
Why Check-marking?
- Check-marking ensures that the assessor’s marking of student work is consistent and fair
- It focuses on checking the marking and not the assessment tool
- It assures that the quality of our assessment and marking practices; therefore, we are better able to evaluate the capabilities of our graduates
- Ensure marking is fair, consistent and accurate
- Check-marking occurs in-between scheduled internal post-moderation of assessments. Essentially, if you are not conducting an internal post-moderation of your assessment(s), then you are check-marking.
MIT’s moderation cycle follows and adheres to NZQA’s moderation cycle. Moderation consists of the following activities:
- Internal and External pre-moderation
- Internal and External post-moderation
- Check-marking
MIT’s moderation process assures that our assessment, learning and teaching, and our courses and programmes are of a high calibre, deserving of a Category 1 Provider, and supports meaningful learning towards tauira (student) success.

Any ticks No and any issues with the assessor’s marking of students’ work will result in a failed Check Marking.
What to do when the check-marker/moderator has ticked ‘No’ (refer to AC 4.3 Moderation Procedure)
- A professional conversation between the assessor and check-marker, to come to an agreement regarding acceptable marking standards
- If yes, and an acceptable marking standard between the assessor and check-marker can be obtained, then results (i.e., the student mark) can be amended
- If no, then the Head of School can determine the outcome
