Moderation is a key feature of quality assurance at MIT and for your programme delivery. Moderation activities must be planned and monitored. Your programme keeps track of moderation activities using the Moderation Planning & Tracking Tool (MP & TT).
Who is responsible for what?
Assessment Writer:
- make sure your assessments are moderated before handing out to students.
- collate your moderation pack and give it to your moderator on time.
- respond to recommendations by your moderator as soon as they are ready.
- inform your ALQ to update the MP&TT when moderation is done so they can update course assessment dates.
Moderators:
- provide positive and fair criticisms to the assessment writer that will help improve the assessments.
- complete the moderation as soon as possible,
- make sure the assessment writer fixes any issues and bring back to you for final approval if there are any.
- provide the moderated assessment back to distribute to the students as soon as they are approved.
Academic Leads Quality (ALQ)
- As the ALQ, your role is to keep an oversight of programme moderation.
- set up the MP&TT.
- table it at the PC for approval and sends it to the PC for approval, and ensure it is done according to the schedule.
- work with your team to ensure all moderation is completed correctly and tabled at PC as part of your regular report.
PC and SAER Committees
- Committees have oversight of moderation activities, reporting, and ensuring the quality of the programme is maintained.
- Programme Committees (PC) approve the MP & TT at the start of the year and will maintain an oversight of all moderation activities to ensure the quality of the programme is maintained.
- The Self-Assessment and Evaluation Committee (SAER) receives an update on moderation activities from the academic quality team who work closely with the programmes if there is any external moderation throughout the year.
Academic Partners
- Contact the partners if you need help. We will:
- help you to be compliant with policies and procedures.
- guide you on how to moderate efficiently and effectively
- work with you and your ALQ to make sure that the materials for moderation meet external requirements before submission.
- facilitate moderation workshops
Hints and Tips
- If you are stuck, contact the academic partners on academicpartner@manukau.ac.nz

- Be constructive in your feedback – if there are errors, or simply things you’d do differently, mention it. Remember you are helping each other to improve, not rubber stamp an assessment as fit-for-purpose.
- Read the Assessment and Moderation Policy (AC4) and Moderation Procedure (AC4/3)
