Use page templates inside of Canvas by utilising the duplicate feature.
Learn a fast, and efficient way to develop your content by duplicating pre-existing pages to use as a template. Page templates help establish design consistency in your course and saves you time applying styling.
The MIT Canvas Standards (MCS) includes a Content page template containing what you may need such as a header, copy, and footer style. You could also create your own page template adding elements that you use regularly.
To begin creating a page from the template:
- Create a page to use as a template (or you could stick with the MCS Content template). It’s a good idea to leave this as unpublished.
- Click Pages on the course navigation menu.
- Select View all pages, and navigate to the template page.
- Click the three dots on the right to open the options, choose Duplicate.
- A new page will be created with ‘Copy’ on the end. It will include all design elements from the original page. It will remain unpublished until you publish the page.
- Edit the page, add a new name and add your content as desired.
Duplicating pages inside of the Modules
You can use the same method of duplicating a page template directly inside of the module. Working directly inside of modules will save you time adding the page to the module later.
- Click Modules on the navigation menu.
Click the three dots on the right of the page you want to duplicate to open the options, choose Duplicate.
Follow steps 5 and 6 above.
Hints and Tips
- Try creating your own template using features unique to your course.
- You can create more than one template, and use them for more targeted design ie Introduction pages, activity pages etc.
- Duplicate an entire module to maintain page structure.
