PER data – Introduction to reading data tables

This page will help you to make sense of the data in your PER.

Your PER is prepopulated with data that is provided by the MIT analyst team and is based on what has been reported to TEC (the Tertiary Education Commission). You will find more information on the individual data sets in other PER data pages.

PER Data Section

The data section in your PER will look something like this:

What is included in the data?

The data will:

  • Include information on EFTS (Equivalent Full-Time Students) data, graduate destination data, graduate outcomes data and course completion data (where applicable)
  • Be provided in graphical form
  • Include all students
  • Some data will be broken down into Maori, Pasifika, Under 25s and International – these groups are priority learners identified by TEC and NZQA
  • Be on a percentage and numerical basis where possible

The data includes all enrolments and all completion rates reported in a year.
There may be courses where the student enrolled in the previous year but completed this year (i.e. a semester 2 enrolment on a full year programme).
There may be courses where students are enrolled and not yet completed (i.e. an extension or a course that runs from year to year).
Differences in cohort sizes from mid-year to mid-year may also affect the retention and success data.

What can the data tell me?

We can use the data to identify:

  • Increasing or decreasing enrolment numbers
  • Overall course completion rates over time
  • Changes in total enrolment numbers per year
  • Year on year trends showing priority group completion rates again the rest of the cohort
  • Graduate destinations for further study and/or employment where this has been collected centrally
  • Trends in the students’ completion rates at qualification level
  • Success rates by individual course highlighting where students appear to be doing well or not so well.

Hints and Tips

  • It is important to look at the individual data AND the overall picture to get the full story
  • If there is an issue with the data, provide evidence in another form (e.g. class lists or results sheets) to give a true picture
