Where Course Outline information should be displayed in your Canvas course and how the MIT Canvas Standards page can help you do this.
Students need a Course Outline containing all the information about their course as per the MIT Student Regulations.
Syllabus is the name of the Canvas page where this information can be stored. Do not link to e.g. a Word/PDF document. Instead, place the information directly onto the Canvas Syllabus page. This is made easy for you when you use the MIT Canvas Standards template. The information shown on this page includes:
- Purpose
- Learning Outcomes
- Assessments
- Course marks
- Study time (Notional learning hours, not just study. ‘Study’ is a friendly word for students).
- Course attendance
- Course expectations
- Plagiarism information
- MyKoha
- General Study Information
This page also contains information about icons and banners used in the course to aid student navigation.
Where do I find the information to put on this page?
The course descriptor in the PAD contains information about the course purpose, notional hours, learning outcomes, assessment etc. Use this information as a basis for the information on the Syllabus page. Information in the PAD cannot be altered, but a course descriptor is not a ‘student friendly’ document. This Syllabus page exists so that the key information about your course can be given to the student in a format they will easily understand.
Use the MIT Canvas Standards template – it’s the easiest way to format the information you’ll need to give your students.
