What are Canvas Pages?

Read about Pages in Canvas, and how you can use them.

Pages store content and resources in your Canvas course. Pages can include text, video, links and other content. When you plan your Canvas course you will break down your course into modules. These modules then contain all the items they need, this includes Pages, Discussions, Quizzes, Assignments. Pages are the item where most of your content will go.

You can allow students to edit certain pages to contribute, e.g. Wikis, but there are other ways to do this which might be easier to manage.

MIT Canvas Standards

The MIT Canvas Standards template suggests a format for a module and this includes some pages. Pages within modules automatically have navigation to the next page on them. This creates a linear experience for the students.

MIT Canvas Standards template recommends that a module has an overview and closing page so that your students have context for what they’re studying.

Hints and Tips

  • How long is a page? How long is a piece of string? You can have pages as long as you need. Some students will read pages on a device, others a monitor. There is no right and wrong answer. Breakdown learning for your students into sensible sized chunks.
  • Make sure student navigate by Modules. You can turn off viewing your course using Pages if you want. Viewing by Pages lists pages in alphabetical order, not your planned logical order through use of Modules.
  • You can import Pages (and other Canvas items) from existing courses, then you have to only edit them, not remake them from scratch.
