Learn how to make a podcast from start to finish, including planning, recording, editing, and sharing on Canvas or Spotify.
Podcasts are a great way to share ideas, teaching tips, or stories with your students. In this video, you’ll learn how to make a podcast from start to finish, including planning, recording, editing, and sharing it online.
Start by choosing a clear topic. Focus on one idea and decide what you want listeners to take away. Write a short script, about five to ten minutes long. Keep sentences simple, and read it out loud to hear how it sounds.
Next, set up a quiet recording space. Close windows, turn off fans, and use soft furnishings to absorb echoes. Even a small wardrobe can work well. For equipment, a headset or USB microphone gives cleaner sound, but your laptop or phone works too. Keep the microphone 10–20 centimetres from your mouth and speak slightly across it to avoid harsh sounds.
Recording can be done on multiple devices. Mac users can try Voice Memos, GarageBand, or Audacity. PC users can use Voice Recorder or Audacity. Audacity is free for both Mac and PC and lets you trim, remove noise, and export audio easily. If recording on a phone, use Voice Memos on iPhone or Easy Voice Recorder on Android. Record in short sections to make editing easier.
When editing, focus on clarity. Remove long pauses or background noise, but don’t worry about making it perfect. Export your file as an MP3 with a clear name, like CourseName_Episode01.mp3. You can upload it directly to Canvas with notes and a transcript or host it on platforms like Spotify via Creators for Spotify. This platform automatically publishes to Spotify and Apple Podcasts and provides free listener analytics.
Tip: Keep podcasts short and clear. Practice a few episodes to get comfortable with recording and editing—your students will appreciate concise, engaging content.
