Learn about MIT’s student survey system in part one of the MyKoha series.
Getting feedback from students is important. It lets you know what’s going well and not so well, and it’s an opportunity for our students to be heard. There are two survey opportunities during each course, one near the beginning and one at the end.
Start of Course Survey
In Week 2 students can complete the First Impressions Survey. This will ask them about their experience of the application and enrolment process. This is a programme survey – they will only be asked about it once during their programme of study.
In Week 2 students will also be given a Start of Course survey when they are asked some questions about the course they’re on, to gauge how well they’re settling in to study.
End of Course Survey
Two weeks before the end of the course, students can complete an End of Course Survey and a Kaiako (Lecturer) Evaluation survey. This is their opportunity to provide feedback on the course itself and give the lecturer some feedback.
How does the survey system work?
MIT uses an external survey provider. Surveys are set-up based on information in EBS and Canvas. Surveys are created and distributed to students for you, and results of student surveys are sent to you automatically after the surveys close.
How do I tell my students about it?
Let your students know before any of the surveys are open, that they will be surveyed. Here’s a few words to help you do this:
In Week 2 of the course we’re going to ask you to complete a survey about your experiences so far at MIT. It’ll cover application and enrolment and how you’re settling in to study here.
In the last couple of weeks of the course we’re going to ask you to complete an end of course survey. The survey is about the course and about the lecturers teaching it. We want to know what’s good about the course, and about how we can make this course better for future learners.
Your feedback will help us to improve. The surveys will be announced in Canvas and a link will come to your MIT email address. We’re going to schedule time in our course-on-course date for you to complete the surveys. If you want to know more about the surveys, you can go to MIT’s website and look up ‘Student survey’.
Hints and Tips
- Survey questions have been approved by Academic Committee
- All surveys are anonymous – make sure you reiterate this to your students
- To ensure surveys are given to students, make sure you publish your Canvas courses
- Survey links will be sent to the students through Canvas and email
