4 MyKoha: End of Course Survey

Prepare for the End of Course Survey in part four of the MyKoha series.

Congratulations! You’ve nearly made it to the end of your course. The End of Course Survey is about to be deployed. All courses on all NZQA approved programmes are surveyed. The End of Course Survey will provide insight into what your students thought about your course.

What do we ask?

  1. I was given all the course information I needed to succeed.
  2. The course followed the expected course outline.
  3. The course assessment (assignment) requirements were communicated clearly.
  4. The pace of the course was fair and reasonable.
  5. The course was inclusive of Māori knowledge.
  6. Taking into account all aspects of this course (its content, structure, assessments and teaching), how would you rate the course overall?
  7. A single free text field: ‘Do you have any other feedback?’

Notice item 3 above in bold. This question was asked in the Start of Course Survey. We ask it again so that if there were issues early on with the assessment information, this question can show that you responded promptly to your students about this.

Why is End of Course Survey important?

Your students are going to be asked what they think about their course (you know this in advance), so make sure that you take the time to give the students a great experience with you. We want students to enjoy their study and to stay with us, so here’s what you can do throughout the course:

  1. Given the students all the course information they need.
    • Make sure that if you provide information is class, you provide it afterwards on Canvas. If you deliver online classes record them and make the recording available. Provide information on Canvas, and make sure that library information is easily accessible. And above all, make sure you provide information that’s related to the learning outcomes (teach what you’re supposed to teach).
  2. Follow the expected course outline.
    • Update your course outline on canvas for students to follow. Whether you prefer weekly or topic, tell your students how the outline is set out for the course.
  3. Communicate assessment requirements clearly.
    • Talk through when assessments will be with the students at the beginning of the course. A lot of students find assessments worrying, let them know there won’t be any surprises. Provide the assessment tasks, rubrics, marking criteria to the students. Make sure your assessments have been pre-moderated.
  4. Check if you have communicated the course assessment requirements clearly.
    • You should have done this at the beginning of the course so this should be just a quick check if you have missed out anything before the course ends.
  5. Check if the pace of the course was fair and reasonable
    • Start by looking at the course outline you set in the beginning. If the weeks or topics are aligned to according to how you planned the course then you are being reasonable. If you have gone too far ahead, slow down. If you are behind, check why that is and then make plans to catch up.
  6. Maori knowledge inclusive
    • Before the course begins, check your learning outcomes and indicative content to ensure you can incorporate Maori knowledge. If you are not sure how, contact the marae team.

How do I get my students to complete the survey?

Two weeks before the end of the course, this survey is distributed through Canvas directly to students. It will be open for three weeks (until one week after the end of the course).

Reserve time in class for students to complete the survey. They will be able to complete this survey and the Kaiako (Lecturer) Evaluation Survey at the same time. These surveys only take a few minutes to complete.

Hints and Tips

  • FIS is not distributed through Canvas so you will not receive reminders. However, this survey runs at the same time as the Start of Course survey, so complete them together!
  • Talk about it! Encourage your students that you need their feedback to improve your course.
  • Schedule time in class for students to complete the FIS survey (and Start of Course Survey)
  • Advise students that the survey is anonymous and their quality feedback will help us understand their needs and make improvements.
  • Tell students to check emails from Evaluations@manukau.ac.nz in their Manukau mail account to access the survey link.
  • Follow-up with students who are yet to complete the survey to do so before the window closes.
