Prepare for the First Impression Surveys (FIS) in part two of the MyKoha series.
First Impression Survey are conducted for every NZQA approved programme. This survey asks questions about the application and enrolment process, and MIT’s orientation and support services.
What do we ask?
Application and enrolment – the survey asks about students’ access to information, how straightforward the application/enrolment process was, timetable information provided before their first day, and their overall experience with Ask Me!
Orientation – the survey asks about orientation, pōwhiri, and whether students attended in-person or online
Student access to technology – the survey asks about students access to computer, laptop or table and whether they know where to get help with technology.
Student support services – the survey asks students about Ask Me! Student advisors, priority learner support, health and counselling services, career and employment solutions, student advocacy, chaplaincy services, international student support and childcare.
The survey also asks how likely students are to recommend MIT to whānau, friends or colleagues.
Why is FIS important?
Getting students through the door and staying to study their entire programme is obviously important. It’s good to know whether students have a positive experience both before they reach your class and in the first few weeks. For some students return to study and can stressful and this survey is a way of finding out whether so far whether their experience at MIT has been good.
How do I get my students to complete the survey?
In Week 2 of their programme, this survey is emailed to students to their manukaumail email address. It will be open for two weeks. It is not a Canvas pop-up because it isn’t linked to the course, it’s linked to the programme, so it’s important that you tell your students to go look in their email for the link to the survey.
Reserve time in class for students to complete the survey. They will be able to complete this survey and the Start of Course at the same time. These surveys only take a few minutes to complete.
Hints and Tips
- FIS is not distributed through Canvas so you will not receive reminders. However, this survey runs at the same time as the Start of Course survey, so complete them together!
- Talk about it! Encourage your students that you need their feedback to improve your course.
- Schedule time in class for students to complete the FIS survey (and Start of Course Survey)
- Advise students that the survey is anonymous and their quality feedback will help us understand their needs and make improvements.
- Tell students to check emails from Evaluations@manukau.ac.nz in their manukaumail account to access the survey link.
- Follow-up with students who are yet to complete the survey to do so before the window closes.
